Previously, we talked about the use of the first conditional. Now, it’s time to move to the second! This one is used to talk about unreal or hypothetical situations in the present or future — things that are unlikely, but still possible.
It follows this structure: If + past simple, would + base verb. This is useful in business to discuss ideas, possibilities, and strategies that are not yet real, but are being considered.
Here are two examples:
1. If the budget were higher, we would invest in a new platform.
(Se o orçamento fosse maior, investiríamos em uma nova plataforma.)
2. If I had more time, I would schedule weekly training sessions for the team.
(Se eu tivesse mais tempo, agendaria sessões de treinamento semanais para a equipe.)
Remember to use the second conditional to explore scenarios, pitch ideas, or highlight limitations in a professional way. Make sure to share this content with your colleagues!
